In 2013, Elaine Read and her husband, Matt Weyandt, moved to Costa Rica with their 3 year old and 4 month old to live an unplugged life. While there, they fell in love with the taste of the artisanal dark chocolate being produced locally from fresh cacao coming straight from the rainforest. Knowing they would eventually return to Atlanta, they devoted the rest of their time in Costa Rica to learning how to make this pure form of chocolate. In 2014, Elaine and Matt opened Xocolatl Small Batch Chocolate — the city’s only craft chocolate factory specializing in origin-specific, healthy dark chocolate made from fine flavor cacao that is sustainably grown and ethically sourced–in Krog Street Market in downtown’s Inman Park neighborhood. Before discovering her passion for making fine dark chocolate, Elaine worked with non-profit organizations focused on international humanitarian development and relief aid. This background daily inspires her dedication to doing business in a way that is fair, transparent and sustainable to both the cacao farmers and suppliers she works with and the customers in Atlanta and beyond who are looking for dark chocolate that is delicious, healthy and made with true craftsmanship. When she’s not working with chocolate, Elaine is raising her two beautiful children.
